The experiences of homelessness and displacement have made a vast impact on the lives and mindsets of all of the members of my immediate family.  These life altering experiences have challenged us in ways that have encouraged us to remain resilient in our pursuit for success and excellence.”

Tara was in middle school when her family joined New Ground.  She focused on academics as a way out of the cycle of poverty and homelessness.  Her mother was a strong example as she returned to school for her college degree.

My family’s ability to overcome these barriers has only strengthened my determination to make a commitment to exceed all boundaries set before me.  These experiences, while traumatizing, have left me with the belief that with hard work, determination and the help of others, anything is truly possible.”

Tara understood that her family needed assistance to make things better; they utilized everything New Ground had to offer for the best results.

“I gained invaluable access to resources and experiences through our participation in this program.  My siblings and I have been afforded opportunities that our family could not otherwise afford, in efforts to support us in our goals.”

Tara’s mother completed her Bachelor Degree and then Master Degree while with New Ground, significantly increasing her income and ultimately affording homeownership.  But Tara had goals of her own to accomplish.

“Although we have been most fortunate to receive various forms of assistance, the educational piece is the most valuable of them all.  The concept of not belonging to a school district and not being able to continue my education in the environment that I was accustomed to was an overwhelming ordeal.  I was afraid that I would lose my education and feared what would happen.  Once the matter was resolved I became more determined than ever to succeed and do the very best.”

Graduating from high school with honors, Tara earned a full college scholarship.

“I am truly grateful to New Ground. I hope to someday be able to return the favor, although I don’t believe it will be anything close to what they have done for me.”
