Programs

Getting Focused

Getting Focused is an independently-funded program which began in 1993 in collaboration with New Ground. Children and young adults in the Long Term Housing program are eligible to participate, as are children in The INN's emergency shelters and other selected agencies.

Participants learn about photography by being taught how to use manual 35mm cameras, explore the art of digital imaging, and participate in an exhibit of their own work. Coupled with learning the art of photography, the children are taught various conceptual concepts and enhance their writing capabilities through a combination of creative writing/photo projects and the creation of personal essays on their "Getting Focused" experience.

The work of the children of Getting Focused is displayed in exhibits at the African American Museum, Nassau County Museum of Art, Long Island Children's Museum and many local public libraries.
