Academic Scholarship Program
Through the New Ground Academic Scholarship Program, children and adults can realize their goal of academic success, thereby taking the necessary steps to break the cycle of homelessness. LTHP and JSP parents as well as our veterans are eligible for tuition assistance through this program to make it possible to secure a higher degree and ultimately increase their overall earning potential. New Ground staff assist our adults with applying for various education programs including local colleges, universities and vocational training schools. Although they apply for all forms of financial aid, there are many who do not qualify for 100% tuition assistance. This Program assists these adults by covering the portion of their tuition that is not covered by grants and loans. Without this assistance, they would be unable to attend their academic program thus preventing them from ever securing greater education and increasing their overall household earnings. Adults who have benefited from this program have secured Associate Degrees, Bachelor Degrees, Master Degrees and vocational certifications in such fields as Licensed Practical Nurse, Paralegals, and Licensed Commercial Drivers.
Our Academic Scholarship Program also benefits the children in our homeless families. When necessary, those with the academic aptitude are extracted from low performing school districts in which they reside and placed in higher performing schools with a strong focus on academic achievement. New Ground places middle and high school students in private schools where they receive the necessary support and guidance to earn high scores and remain focused on graduation and college. These schools have consistent graduation rates of above 85% whereas the district public school has average graduation rates of 50%. These districts also struggle with high rates of gang violence, drugs, absenteeism, truancy, teen pregnancy and more. New Ground removes students from these environments to prevent exposure to such negative influences, as well as the peer pressure to focus on things other than academic success. Since this program began serving the children of New Ground, all participating children have demonstrated strong academic performance, with 100% being promoted to the next grade and/ or graduating on time.
